Privacy Policy

Last Updated: January 2025

This Privacy Policy describes how the Arev Chrome Extension ("we", "our", or "the extension") collects, uses, and stores your information. We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about our data practices.

1. Data Collection and Storage

The Arev extension stores data exclusively in Chrome's local storage (chrome.storage.local). All data remains on your device and is never transmitted to our servers or any external service we control.

Data Stored Locally:

  • Location Data: City name, country name, latitude, and longitude coordinates
  • Weather Data: Current weather conditions and forecast information
  • Cache Timestamps: Timestamps indicating when data was last fetched

Cache Expiration:

  • Location data: Cached for 24 hours
  • Weather data: Cached for 1 hour

You can clear all cached data at any time through the extension's settings or by uninstalling the extension.

2. Geolocation API

The extension may request access to your device's geolocation through the browser's Geolocation API. This is used to provide accurate weather information based on your current location.

Important: The extension only uses geolocation data if you explicitly grant permission. If you deny permission, the extension will attempt to determine your location using your IP address instead (see Section 3).

Geolocation data is used solely to fetch weather information and is stored locally on your device. We do not have access to your geolocation data.

3. Third-Party Services

The extension uses the following third-party services to provide weather and location functionality. These services have their own privacy policies and terms of service:

3.1 Open-Meteo Weather API

Service: open-meteo.com
Purpose: Provides weather forecast data based on your location coordinates
Data Sent: Latitude and longitude coordinates only
Data Received: Weather conditions, temperature, humidity, wind speed, and forecast data
Privacy Policy: open-meteo.com/en/privacy

3.2 ip-api.com

Service: ip-api.com
Purpose: Determines your approximate location based on your IP address
Data Sent: Your IP address (automatically included in the API request)
Data Received: Approximate location (city, country, latitude, longitude)
Privacy Policy: ip-api.com/docs/legal

Note: This service is used as a fallback when geolocation permission is not granted. IP-based location is less accurate than GPS-based geolocation.

3.3 BigDataCloud Reverse Geocoding API

Service: bigdatacloud.com
Purpose: Converts latitude and longitude coordinates into human-readable location names (city and country)
Data Sent: Latitude and longitude coordinates
Data Received: City name and country name
Privacy Policy: bigdatacloud.com/privacy-policy

4. Data Sharing and Disclosure

We do not collect, store, or share your personal data with any third parties. The extension operates entirely client-side, and all data remains on your device.

When the extension communicates with third-party APIs (as described in Section 3), your location coordinates or IP address may be transmitted to those services. This is necessary for the extension to function. Please review each service's privacy policy to understand how they handle this data.

5. Your Rights and Choices

You have the following rights regarding your data:

  • Clear Cache: You can clear all cached data through the extension settings
  • Disable Geolocation: You can deny geolocation permission in your browser settings
  • Uninstall: Uninstalling the extension will remove all locally stored data

6. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Last Updated" date at the top of this page indicates when the policy was last revised. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
